Bell County is one of our longer drives. In normal traffic, Belton is about 60 minutes from South Austin, Temple about 65 and Killeen about 75. The Census Bureau estimates 402,248 residents in July 2025 on about 1,054 square miles of land, and Belton is the county seat. What sets it apart is the mix: a large Army post to the west, a medical and rail city to the east, and lakes between them. Fort Hood took back that name in 2025 after a short run as Fort Cavazos, so older paperwork may show either.

Blackland clay, Grand Prairie and two big lakes

The Handbook of Texas runs the Balcones Escarpment southeast to northwest through the middle of the county. To the east, on the Blackland Prairie, the land is level to gently rolling, and Houston black clay is the most common soil. To the west, the Grand Prairie has rolling uplands cut by deep stream valleys, with limy subsoils and some shallow, stony ground.

The Little River collects the Leon, Lampasas and Salado, and Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake are the main reservoirs. For gutters, the takeaway is simple. East of the escarpment, keep water far from the slab. West of it, watch the slope and the rock.

Dark blackland clay on the east side needs discharge well clear of the slab.

This is the oldest housing of our six county areas. The Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey puts the median year built at 1998, and about 41 percent of occupied homes are rented. A house from that year on its original gutters is 28 years into the 20 to 30 years that national tables list for aluminum, and the owner may not live on site to notice a sag. Post housing moves and tenant turnover mean a loose run can go unreported for a long time.

How Killeen, Belton and Temple differ

  • Killeen and Harker Heights. Rentals and military moves mean owners are often away. Line up a local contact for access.
  • Belton and the lakes. Hillside lots above Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake bring tree debris and slope. Plan downspout routes around both.
  • Temple and the east side. Houston black clay is the concern here. We aim for 6 to 10 feet of discharge, and never under 5.

Hail and wind along the I-35 line

Hail is a real threat here. On April 12, 2022, storms crossed the county with a tornado near Salado, and the county judge reported 23 people injured. A 5.5-inch hailstone fell at a Salado home, and the National Weather Service asked the owner to keep it for study. Few trees stand between storm and roof on the eastern prairie, so check gutters after any severe storm. Look for loose runs, opened corners and downspouts knocked off their straps.

Gutter services for Bell County homes and rentals

  • Storm and hail repair

Documented damage and written repair quotes after prairie hail and wind. After a storm like April 2022 near Salado, check corners, hangers and downspout straps first, and keep photos with your claim file.

  • Gutter replacement

Full-house swaps for landlords and owners, with old gutters hauled off. On 1990s homes around Killeen and Temple, a new run can close out a leak history before the next tenant moves in.

  • Downspout installation

Longer discharge on Temple's Houston black clay. The aim is 6 to 10 feet from the foundation, never under 5, with the route written on the quote so a remote owner can see it.

  • New gutter installation

Whole-house runs for homes around Belton and Killeen with partial gutters. Each run is roll-formed on site from aluminum coil, so a long rental or lake-house eave has seams only at corners and end caps.

  • Leaking gutter repair

A drip at a corner on a Killeen rental can run for months before anyone reports it. Have the seam or corner fixed early, before water reaches the fascia or the slab.

  • Gutter cleaning

Twice a year at least, and more on hillside lots above Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake. On rentals, a tenant turnover is an easy time to clear the run and check each downspout.

From our Google reviews, on replacement work and staying reachable, which both matter when the owner is out of town:

“Omar and his coworker replaced all our old gutters, hauled off the old gutters and said to call if we had any issues at all. Very polite and efficient.”

“…He responds to all your messages and solves your queries. I have talked with many other vendors before deciding to go with V&V. They were prompt on time, commitment and professional in their work.”

Belton Lake, Stillhouse Hollow and the water boards

The two lakes are Corps of Engineers flood-control reservoirs. Belton Lake's dam dates to 1954, on the Leon River, and Stillhouse Hollow's to 1968, on the Lampasas. Corps parks such as Dana Peak and Union Grove sit on Stillhouse Hollow, and homes on the hills around them deal with the slope and rock described above.

Water service splits the county. Bell County WCID No. 1 draws from both lakes and treats water for Fort Hood, Killeen, Harker Heights and Belton. Temple left that system and built its own plant. So a rainwater or drainage question goes to your own city, not to a county office, and it pays to ask before you plan a buried line.

A long run up I-35 to Temple and Killeen

We drive up I-35, then take US 190 west toward Killeen. Because the trip is long, photos and rough measurements help us confirm scope before we come. On site, we measure linear feet, check the fascia and mark downspout locations. The quote is written and itemized, so an out-of-town owner or a property manager can approve it remotely. After install, we clean up and check discharge at each downspout.

Rentals, insurance and local rules

Bell County cities and the county run their own permit offices, so check with yours before work begins. Austin's WUI code is an Austin rule, so ask locally what applies. Landlords should decide up front who approves the work and who meets the crew. On a storm claim, we can document damage and quote the repair, but we do not negotiate claims. The Texas Department of Insurance says a policyholder must pay the deductible, and it is illegal for a contractor to offer to absorb it.

Bell County gutter questions

Do you serve Killeen and Temple from Austin?

Yes. Temple is about 65 minutes from our South Austin base in normal traffic, and Killeen about 75. Belton is closer at about 60. With a drive that long, photos and rough measurements help us plan the estimate. Call with the address and we will tell you honestly when a crew can get there.

Can I approve gutter work on a rental while I am away?

Yes. The written quote lists gauge, size, color, downspout count and guards, so you can review it from anywhere. We will need someone to confirm access and a way to reach you during the job. Ask for photos of the finished work and keep them with the invoice, which helps when a tenant moves out or a new manager takes over.

How far should downspouts reach on Temple clay?

Aim for 6 to 10 feet from the foundation, and never less than 5. USDA NRCS design guidance calls for at least 5 feet of extension on expansive soils, and Houston black clay is the most common soil on the county's blackland side. A splash block alone does not reach that far, so plan on an extension or a pad and a route.
