Most new gutters here are seamless aluminum in K-style, formed at the house. That is a sound default, but a default is not a design. Two neighbors with the same floor plan can need different downspout positions because one yard falls toward the slab. This page covers how we think through a new install, so you can check any bid against it, ours included.
Gutter installation in Austin: five decisions that set the job
| Decision | Usual answer | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Aluminum, .027 inch or heavier | A wish for dent resistance or a period look |
| Gutter size | 5-inch K-style | Large roof area, heavy trees, overflow history |
| Downspouts | About one per 30 feet of gutter | Long runs, roof valleys, where a yard can take water |
| Guards | Optional | Tree cover, or WUI rules on new Austin construction |
| Discharge | 6 to 10 feet from the foundation | Clay soil, slopes, patios, property lines |
Size is the one people ask about first and the one that matters least on its own. Add downspouts before assuming the gutter is too small. Our sizing pages show the math, and 6-inch gutters explain when going larger pays.

What a new gutter installation includes
A full install covers everything that moves water, from the roof edge to where it lands in the yard. This belongs on any bid you compare.
- Measuring. Linear feet, corners, fascia condition and outlet positions, taken at the house.
- Seamless runs. Aluminum formed on site from coil, .027 inch or heavier, with seams only at corners and end caps.
- Hanging. Each run fastened to sound fascia and set to fall toward its outlets.
- Downspouts. About one per 30 feet of gutter, in 2x3 or 3x4.
- Discharge. Extensions or splash pads, planned before the first hanger.
- Removal. Old gutters down and hauled off on a replacement, with cleanup before the walkthrough.
Two details are worth raising on any bid. Fine Homebuilding notes that hidden hangers keep the gutter line clean and work best with heavier .032 stock, so ask which hanger your run gets. Ask too how the back of the gutter meets the roof's drip edge, because water has to land in the trough and not behind it.
Signs an Austin house is ready for new gutters
New gutters earn their cost when a house has none, or when the old run keeps needing the same fix. The Austin area's median home dates to about 2000 (Census ACS 2020-2024), so many original builder runs are past 20 years old. Soil makes the case on a house with no gutters. On the Blackland clay east of I-35, ground swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and an open eave drops all its water right at the slab. Look for these on your own house:
- A trench or bare dirt along the drip line
- Mud splashed up brick or siding near the ground
- Overflow in every hard rain, even right after a cleaning
- Seams that drip again soon after a reseal
- A run holding water long after the rain stops
- Stained or soft fascia along the eave
One of these can be a repair. Several together usually point to a new system. If you are unsure, start with gutter repair and have both options priced.
Aluminum, steel or copper for new gutters?
Pick aluminum unless you have a specific reason not to. It is light, does not rust, comes in many colors and is what a portable roll former runs. National contractor tables commonly list it at 20 to 30 years, though that is not Austin data. Steel and copper solve narrower problems, and we confirm availability when you call.
- Steel gutters
For dent resistance, with rust control to plan for. Ask us about availability.
- Copper gutters
True copper versus a copper-color finish, and what a proper job involves.
- Downspout installation
Moving outlets, upsizing openings and carrying water clear of clay around the slab.
- New construction gutters
Scheduling gutters for builders and custom homes around the rest of the trades.
- Gutters for metal roofs
Fast runoff off smooth panels changes how the run is sized and set.
What should a gutter install cost, and how do you read the quote?
Use published numbers to plan and a written quote to decide. Angi's 2026 Austin guide lists an average seamless job of $1,128, and a national gutter-cost listing for Austin gives $7 to $15 per linear foot installed. Those are third-party figures, not V&V pricing, and our seamless gutter page explains why they disagree. The estimate is free and the quote is written.
Two bids at the same total can be very different jobs. Line them up this way:
| Quote line | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Aluminum gauge | A stated number. .027 or heavier, not 'standard' |
| Gutter size and profile | 5-inch or 6-inch, K-style or other |
| Downspout count and size | Count, plus 2x3 or 3x4 |
| Discharge | Extensions or splash pads, and how far they reach |
| Old gutter removal | Included, and haul-off stated |
| Guards | Material and type, if any |
| Fascia | Any repair priced separately, with scope confirmed |
A few variables move the number more than the size of the house does. Linear feet and corner count set the base. A second story, steep ground or a tight side yard adds ladder time. Heavier gauge, 6-inch gutter and extra 3x4 downspouts add material. Removal, fascia repair, guards and long extensions each add a line. Ask for them separately, so you can drop one without redoing the quote.

How do new gutters go up, step by step?
- We walk the roofline. Linear feet get measured, fascia gets checked, and outlets get marked where the yard can take the water.
- You get it in writing. Gauge, size, color, downspout count and guards appear as separate lines.
- You decide on your time. Approve when ready, then we schedule. Nobody leans on you.
- Old metal comes down. The new runs are roll-formed in the driveway and hung to fall toward each outlet.
- We test the finish. After cleanup you walk it with us, and we confirm discharge reaches where it should.

Length, corners and roof height set the clock, so ask for timing with your quote. Slope gets checked along the whole run, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch per 10 feet, not only at the first hanger.
Where should the water go after the downspout?
Plan this before the first hanger goes up. On expansive clay, carry water 6 to 10 feet from the foundation and never less than 5. USDA NRCS guidance sets 5 feet of extension as the floor on those soils. Then look at what is out there: a neighbor's fence, a walkway, a bed you do not want washed out.
Customers have asked us for more than a plain outlet. Reviews describe a new downspout with gutters redirected to rain barrels, an AC drain line built into a downspout, and concrete splash pads under the outlets. Tell us what you want at the estimate, because outlet position is much easier to change on paper than on the wall.

Permits, WUI code and licensing for a new system
The rules depend on where the house sits. In Austin, the City's Work Exempt from Building Permits list covers exterior trim such as fascia and soffits, but it does not name gutters, so confirm with Development Services. Austin's 2024 Wildland-Urban Interface code, for new construction or development starting on or after July 10, 2025, lists noncombustible gutters and downspouts with leaf guards in Zones A, B and C. That rule stops at Austin's jurisdiction. City of Austin contractor registration applies to work under a building or trade permit. Texas has no statewide roofing contractor license, and no state gutter license was found, so check insurance and references yourself. Other cities and HOAs set their own rules.
Why homeowners and builders call V&V
- You deal with the owner. Reviews name Victor on quotes and follow-up.
- Installs are led by family. Victor's son Omar leads crews, and reviewers often name him.
- Builders and roofers use us. Reviews describe whole-house work on new homes and repeat jobs for a roofing company.
- Office notices. One customer describes a notification from the office that installers were en route.
Install reviews are consistent on what matters during a job. Venkat V. says Omar was patient explaining the work. Avijit R. says the team showed up on time and worked quickly without cutting corners. Ben W. says the color matched so well you have to look closely to see the gutters. The estimate shows what your house needs.
“Victor is very professional, very knowledgeable and pleasant to speak with. He did excellent work on gutter installation on whole house. Complete job was done pretty quickly and within my budge.”
“As a home builder, I had V&V install full gutters on a new modern home. Victor the owner was responsive, easy to work with and gave me a fair price. Victor’s son Omar and another young man did the actual installation. I was impressed with Omar. He is a sharp, meticulous, polite young man and easy to work with.”
“Victor and Omar were very professional and have done a great job for my house gutter installation.. Omar was polite and patient explaining the work and have done a meticulous job .. will definitely recommend !!”
Caring for a new gutter system
Clean at least twice a year and after major storms, per West Virginia University Extension. Walk the house in the first hard rain and look for three things: water over the front edge, drips at corners, and pooling at any outlet. Photograph what you see, because a picture of a problem in the rain tells us more than a dry-day visit. Gutter guards cut the cleaning but do not end it.
We install from our South Austin base across the city and out to Georgetown, Leander, Buda and Elgin, among other service areas.

Common questions
How long does a new gutter installation take?
It depends on run length, corners and roof height, so ask for the schedule with your written quote. Reviewers describe whole-house jobs finished quickly, including one put up within hours, but those are past jobs and not a promise. Tearing out old gutters and any fascia work add time. We tell you what to expect once the house is measured.
Do you take away the old gutters?
Removal is part of the normal install sequence, and one reviewer describes all the old gutters being replaced and hauled off. Make sure removal and haul-off appear on any quote you compare, because a bid that leaves them out can look cheaper than it is. If you want to keep any metal, tell us at the estimate.
Can new gutters feed my rain barrels?
Usually, and we have done it. One review describes a new gutter, a new downspout and other gutters redirected to rain barrels. Tell us where the barrels sit at the estimate so outlets can be placed to suit them. Plan for overflow too, because in a big storm a full barrel still has to send water clear of the foundation.
Will new gutters stop water pooling near my foundation?
They help only if the water is carried far enough. Gutters collect the water; extensions decide where it lands. On clay, aim for 6 to 10 feet from the foundation, and never under 5 feet. If the yard itself falls toward the house, gutters alone may not solve it, and we will say so at the estimate.
How many gutter quotes should I get?
At least three written quotes is a sensible number. Compare gauge, size, downspout count, guard type and removal line by line rather than the bottom line. If one bid is far lower, look for thinner aluminum or fewer downspouts. Verify insurance and references with every company as well, since Texas has no state gutter license to check.
Do you install gutters on brand new homes?
Yes. Reviews describe full installs on new homes, including a builder who hired V&V for a new modern house and owners of a newly built home. Builders should see our new construction gutters page, which covers scheduling around the other trades. Homeowners can call directly with the plans or the measurements.
