Round Rock is on our route, about 30 minutes in normal traffic from our South Austin base on I-35, or on SH 130 when the interstate backs up. We cover ZIPs 78664, 78665 and 78681 and the bits of the city that reach into Travis County. The thing that sets Round Rock apart is that it straddles the Balcones Escarpment. The fault line runs under town, roughly along I-35, and it splits the city into two kinds of ground. Few places in Central Texas change so much in a short drive. A downspout plan that works near Brushy Creek on the west side may be wrong on a clay lot past the Dell Diamond.
Balcones Escarpment: two soils on either side of I-35
| West of I-35 | East of I-35 | |
|---|---|---|
| Terrain | Hilly, stony Hill Country edge | Flat to gently rolling Blackland Prairie |
| USDA soils sampled | Eckrant stony clay, Georgetown stony clay loam | Branyon clay, Houston Black clay, some Eddy gravelly clay loam |
| Shrink-swell (USDA linear extensibility) | Moderate to high, about 6 to 8.5 | Very high in the clays, 13 to 17 |
| Main gutter concern | Leaf litter, rock limits on buried lines | Discharge reach, water near the foundation |
Stony west-side lots tend to shed water across shallow ground, so we favor surface extensions and pads over trenching. East-side lots need distance. Keep discharge 6 to 10 feet out on Branyon or Houston Black clay. Eddy pockets are thin, gravelly and easier on foundations, which is one reason neighbors on the same street can see very different results.
Wind is the other test. On March 21, 2022, an EF-2 tornado ran northeast through the city from near I-35 and SH 45, and city assessments counted 680 damaged residential structures. A gutter patched after that storm may still need a second look at its hangers.

Gutter replacement for aging Round Rock neighborhoods
- Gutter replacement
The 1980s and 1990s housing stock is now past or inside the 20 to 30 year listing. We take the old runs down and haul them off on install day.
- Sagging gutter repair
Decades of hangers working loose on older fascia, especially on west-side tree lots. A sound run can often be rehung at the right slope; a bent one gets priced for replacement.
- Fascia and soffit repair
Old overflow leaves soft trim. We confirm carpentry scope on the estimate. Older Round Rock eaves that spilled for years can hide damage behind the gutter, so we look before hanging anything new.
- Downspout installation
Adds outlets and reach for east-side Branyon and Houston Black clay. Older layouts that relied on one outlet per 40 feet gain another, with discharge reaching 6 to 10 feet.
- Gutter guards
Mature oaks west of I-35 fill older gutters each spring. Micro-mesh keeps tassels and leaves out on tree lots near Brushy Creek, though it still needs an occasional rinse.
- Commercial gutters
Retail and office buildings along the I-35 and University Boulevard corridors. We confirm scope on the estimate, and the written quote lists runs, downspouts and any access limits.
The reason this list leads with replacement is the calendar. Census counts tell the growth story: 2,811 people in 1970, 30,923 in 1990, 61,136 in 2000 and 119,468 in 2020. Census estimates put about 45 percent of housing units before 2000, including roughly 20 percent from the 1990s and 14 percent from the 1980s. Gutters hung in those years were often builder-grade, sectional and thin. National tables list aluminum at 20 to 30 years, so those runs have earned their retirement. Replacement is a good chance to step up to .027 aluminum, which is our minimum, and add a downspout where the old layout relied on one per 40 feet.
“V&V was great to work with. I met with them on a Monday to discuss my project. They came the next day and did a perfect repair and install on my gutters.”
“…From the initial quote to the final installation, everything was handled professionally and efficiently. The team showed up on time, explained what needed to be done, and worked quickly without cutting corners.”

Brushy Creek, Old Town and Williamson County notes
Round Rock takes its name from the anvil-shaped rock in Brushy Creek that marked a low-water crossing, and Chisholm Trail cattle drives passed through after the Civil War. Today the anchors are Old Town, Dell's headquarters and the Dell Diamond, home of the Round Rock Express. I-35 settled the city's future in 1956, when the route was fixed through here and not through Taylor.
Most of the city lies in Williamson County, with a part in Travis County. This is not Austin, so Austin's permit exemptions and wildland-urban interface code do not carry over. Ask Round Rock's planning and development services for any project beyond replacing gutters. If you have an HOA, check its color rules before you pick. Homes near Brushy Creek should think about where discharge heads in a heavy rain, though the storm drain and creek rules belong to the city.
The city's Building Inspection Division says a residential re-roof needs no building permit, but roof modifications take a Residential Remodel Permit. Its page does not name gutters, so call 512-218-5550 with your scope. In historic districts, minor gutter repairs count as ordinary maintenance, and gutters and downspouts can qualify for staff review of a Certificate of Appropriateness. Properties inside the limits pay a monthly drainage fee on the utility bill, and Old Settlers Park, the city's largest, anchors the east side.
From I-35 to your driveway: how the job goes
First comes a free estimate. We measure linear feet, check the fascia, and mark downspouts for your side of town. A written line-item quote follows, with no sales pressure. After approval, we take the old gutters down and haul them off, roll-form the replacement in the driveway and hang it at the correct slope. Customers have told us the office sent a notice when installers were en route. The last step is a walkthrough of the finished job and a discharge check.

Round Rock gutter questions
Should I replace or repair gutters on a 1990s Round Rock house?
Look at the whole run first. If the gutters are sectional, thin and leaking at several joints, replacement usually beats chasing leaks. If they are sound with one bad corner, repair it. A 1990s set is within the 20 to 30 years that national tables list for aluminum. We quote what we find, and the old gutters get hauled off if they go.
Does Round Rock west of I-35 need different gutters than the east side?
The gutter is often the same; the discharge plan is not. West-side stony lots tend to have more trees and shallow rock, so guards and surface extensions come up. East-side clay lots need more reach, 6 to 10 feet from the foundation. We size the gutter from your roof area either way, then set the outlets for your soil.
Which Round Rock ZIP codes do you serve?
We serve the city's standard ZIPs: 78664, 78665 and 78681. That covers both sides of I-35, including homes in the Travis County part of town. If your address is just outside the city or in Williamson County nearby, call anyway. We work across much of the north Austin area and will tell you straight if a job is outside our range.
How can I tell my Round Rock gutters are builder-grade?
Look for visible joints every 10 feet or so, thin metal that dents under thumb pressure, and only one or two downspouts on a long side. Big-box stock often runs .025 or .019 inch against our .027 minimum. We can check the gauge at the estimate. Thin gutters are not automatically failing, but they bend and pull loose sooner under wet leaves.
