Age makes this decision common here. The median home in the Austin area was built around 2000, compared with 1980 nationally (Census ACS 2020-2024), and many of those homes still wear their original builder-grade gutters. National contractor tables commonly list aluminum gutters at 20 to 30 years, though that is not Austin data. So a lot of local gutters are reaching the age where a small repair and a bigger one both deserve a look. Start with the symptom, find the cause, and only then talk about money.
What gutter repair in Austin covers
Most calls fall into one of these groups. Each has its own page with more detail.
- Drips and leaks. Corners, end caps and joints that let water through. See leaking gutter repair.
- Sagging runs. Loose hangers, lost slope and gutters pulling off the house. See sagging gutter repair.
- Storm damage. Hail dents, wind tears and fallen limbs. See storm and hail gutter repair.
- Rot behind the gutter. Soft boards that will not hold a hanger. See fascia and soffit repair. We confirm carpentry scope on the estimate.
- Overflow. Often a clogged outlet rather than a broken gutter. See downspout unclogging.
- Runs past saving. When patches stop making sense. See gutter replacement.
A repair deals with the fault and the reason behind it. We reseal a joint once it is clean and dry, swap loose or bent hangers, reset slope where a stretch has dropped, replace a crushed length and clear whatever is blocking an outlet. Older runs may still hang on long spikes, and Fine Homebuilding reports that critics blame those spikes for large holes, rot and weak grip. Where the cause sits outside the gutter, such as a short discharge, it goes on the quote as its own line.

Why do gutters fail so often around Austin?
The cause is rarely the total rainfall. Austin's normal year brings 36.3 inches over about 86 wet days (NOAA NCEI 1991-2020 normals). That is modest. The trouble is how it arrives. The City of Austin has recorded bursts of more than 5 inches in several hours, and that volume finds every weak joint at once.
- Long dry spells hide faults. July averages 1.93 inches and May averages 5.13 (NOAA). A loose hanger can sit unnoticed for months, then fail in the first spring downpour.
- Oak debris. Leaves and tassels pack into outlets. Water backs up, weight builds and hangers take the load.
- Thin stock. Big-box gutter is often .025 or .019 inch aluminum. The common professional standard is .027 inch, which is also the minimum we hang. Thinner metal bends and dents more easily.
- Clay soil. On expansive soils, USDA NRCS design guidance calls for at least 5 feet of downspout extension. A short discharge at the wall is a repair item too, because the water has to end up somewhere safe.

Repair or replace: how do you decide?
We decide by the pattern of failure, not the age alone. One fault in sound metal is a repair. Faults all along the run usually are not.
| What you see | Repair makes sense when | Replacement makes sense when |
|---|---|---|
| Drip at a corner or end cap | The metal is sound and the joint can be resealed | The metal around the joint is torn or corroded |
| One stretch sagging | The fascia is solid and new hangers can bite | The whole run has lost slope or the stock is kinked |
| Leaks at many joints | Only one or two joints are failing | Sectional gutter leaks joint after joint; a seamless run has seams only at corners and end caps |
| Hail or limb damage | Damage is limited and water still flows | Long lengths are crushed or the lip is bent |

How a gutter repair service visit works
- Tell us the symptom. Where it drips, sags or overflows, and when you notice it.
- Free estimate. We check the run and its joints, look at the fascia behind it, note downspout locations and measure what needs measuring.
- Written quote. Line items state what gets fixed and what, if anything, gets replaced.
- Approve and schedule. There is no sales pressure. Take the quote and think it over.
- The repair. We reseal, rehang or replace the section as quoted. New lengths are roll-formed on site, so they are cut to the house.
- Walkthrough. After cleanup we check the downspout discharge with you.

What does gutter repair cost in Austin?
We do not list repair prices, because repairs vary too much for one number to be honest. The estimate is free and the quote is written. For a rough outside reference, Angi's national gutter repair guide (2025 data) gives a typical range of $240 to $480, and $2 to $7 per linear foot for simple work such as leaks or supports. Angi lists Austin gutter labor at about $75 per hour. These are third-party figures, not our pricing.
These things move a repair price the most:
- Height and access, including two-story eaves and steep ground
- Linear feet affected, and how many joints or hangers are involved
- Whether the fascia behind the gutter is sound
- Whether a new section has to be formed and color-matched
- Any added downspouts or extensions
Two quieter variables catch people out. A faded run may not match new coil, so a quote may show a longer length than the damaged piece to keep one wall even. A repair also grows when the cause sits elsewhere, such as a blocked outlet, so ask for the fix and the cause as separate lines.

Do permits or licenses apply to a gutter repair?
No published Austin rule settles this by name. The City of Austin's Work Exempt from Building Permits list covers repairing or replacing exterior trim on one- and two-family homes and townhouses, and it names wood fascia, trim and soffits. Gutters are not on it. Exempt work must still meet code, so call Development Services when a repair grows past a simple fix.
Austin's Wildland-Urban Interface code says existing buildings generally need not update unless a code official finds a serious safety hazard. Texas has no statewide roofing contractor license, and no state gutter license was found, so check insurance and references yourself. Cities outside Austin and HOAs set their own rules.
Why call V&V for rain gutter repair?
- Family run. Victor owns the company and his son Omar leads the installs. Both are named in many of the Google reviews.
- Repair and install under one roof. If a section is past saving, it can be roll-formed at your house instead of patched.
- Written line items. You see what you are paying for before anything starts.
- Cleanup counts. A reviewer mentions old gutters hauled off, and our process ends with a walkthrough after cleanup.
- Quick when the schedule allows. One customer met with us on a Monday and had the repair done Tuesday. That is one past job, not a promise.
Peter K. wrote that we met on a Monday and did the repair and install the next day. Vann S. wrote that Omar and a coworker hauled off the old gutters and said to call with any issues. Both are past jobs. They show how a job ended, and that is worth asking any company about.
“V&V was great to work with. I met with them on a Monday to discuss my project. They came the next day and did a perfect repair and install on my gutters.”
“Omar and his coworker replaced all our old gutters, hauled off the old gutters and said to call if we had any issues at all. Very polite and efficient.”
We work from a South Austin base across the metro, including Pflugerville, Buda, Kyle and Cedar Park. See all service areas if your town is not listed here.
Gutter maintenance that prevents the next repair
West Virginia University Extension advises cleaning gutters at least twice a year and after major storms, and more often where storms are frequent. Clogged gutters lead to damage around windows, doors and the foundation. Regular gutter cleaning heads off many of the repairs on this page.
Gutter guards cut cleaning, though they do not end it. Keep downspout discharge 6 to 10 feet from the foundation on clay, and never under 5 feet. After any big storm, walk the house and look for new gaps, drips and stains.

Common questions
Can you fix one section of gutter without replacing the whole system?
Yes, in many cases. A single bad joint, a loose stretch or one crushed length can usually be repaired alone. If a new piece is needed, it is roll-formed on site to fit the run. The written quote will say what is being fixed and what is staying as it is, so you can see the scope before you approve it.
How long does a gutter repair take?
It depends on the fault and the access. Resealing a joint is a smaller job than rehanging a long run or forming a new section. Call and we will tell you honestly when a crew can get there. One customer met with us on a Monday and had the work finished on Tuesday, but that is a past job and the schedule changes week to week.
Do I need a permit for gutter repair in Austin?
The City of Austin's list of work exempt from building permits names exterior trim, including wood fascia and soffits, but the page does not mention gutters. Confirm with Development Services if your project goes beyond a simple repair. Other cities and HOAs set their own rules, so check locally before work begins outside Austin.
Is a small gutter leak worth fixing right away?
Yes, if water is landing on wood or next to the slab. A drip that looks minor can wet the fascia every time it rains. West Virginia University Extension links clogged gutters to damage around windows, doors and the foundation, and leaks put water in the same places. A small joint is also a far easier repair before rot sets in.
Should I repair or replace gutters that are 20 or more years old?
Look at the failure pattern first. National contractor tables list aluminum at 20 to 30 years, which is not Austin data. If one joint has failed in sound metal, repair it. If joints, hangers and fascia are failing along the run, a new seamless run may be the better spend. Ask us to quote both so you can compare.
Does Texas require a license to repair gutters?
No state gutter license was found, and Texas has no statewide roofing contractor license either. That means the state is not screening contractors for you. Ask any gutter company for proof of insurance and references, then verify them yourself. City of Austin contractor registration applies to work done under a building or trade permit.
